CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Turtle nest "watchers" have been volunteering around the clock at Carolina Beach, after someone stole sea turtle eggs recently in Brunswick County.
It was nearly a month ago when someone vandalized a sea turtle nest in Ocean Isle Beach.
Now, volunteers with the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project are making sure that does not happen on their watch.
They are monitoring a rare leatherback sea turtle nest in Carolina Beach 24 hours a day to prevent it from being tampered with.
Volunteers say this is the first time in history that a leatherback turtle has nested in Carolina Beach. They usually only see loggerhead nests.
Stealing sea turtles or their eggs is a violation of the federal Endangered Species Act. Thieves could face up to $100,000 fine or prison time.
