WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Nearly 2,400 Americans die each day from a cardiovascular disease.  That's why more than 100,000 Cape Fear residents are taking steps to improve their health and defeat heart disease in the Start! Heart Walk.

"Brisk walking for as little as 30 minutes a day has proven health benefits that can lower your risk of heart disease," said Start! Heart Walk Chairman Bill Norris, Senior Vice President and Commercial Banking Manager at First Citizens Bank.  "The Start! Heart Walk not only helps participants renew their commitment to heart-healthy living through walking but it also generates critical funds for cardiovascular disease research."

Team captains gathered Wednesday at the Hilton Hotel to begin raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke.

Participants will have an opportunity to honor survivors and individuals whose family and friends have suffered from heart disease or stroke and learn how to make changes in their daily lives.

The annual walk will take place October 17 at Legion Stadium.  The event will begin at 8 AM with fun activities for the whole family.  Registration and festivities begin at 9 AM.  The walk begins at 10 AM.

The walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.
