My Turn, Your Turn: Changes to a downtown Wilm. parking lot

By Gary McNair - bio|email

Some of the younger employees at WECT told me about a problem I didn't realize. When they go to downtown Wilmington late at night they intentionally avoid the parking lot on the southwest corner of Market and Second. They tell me that often things get out of control there, including robberies and muggings.

You may have heard the city is now going to close that lot at midnight - instead of 2:00 a.m.  That may help with some of the problems - but it creates at least one new one. To offset the lost revenue, they are expected to raise the fee to park there at any other time by a dollar.

Now that just doesn't seem right me.  A few social deviants get out of hand - and the rest of us pay the price.   Their solution for this problem is begging to be questioned.  I can't believe it is the product of much thought or consideration of other possible options.

And I'm betting our WECT viewers have better ideas.  Share them with us and we'll pass them on.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn to help come up with a better solution.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
