Students survey visitors about beach conditions

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Honor students at UNCW surveyed visitors in effort to gather a list of problems the tourists talk about.

Topping the list are the number of cigarette butts and condoms found in the sand.  They are also concerned with the way lifeguards alert beachgoers of various conditions.

"The flags were kind of small, and our lifeguard chairs are spaced kind of far apart, so there was concern that if you were further away you couldn't really tell whether it was yellow or red or green or whatever," said Sandy Cox with the Kure Beach Protection Committee.

Members of the committee will discuss the findings at a meeting next month.  They'll use the survey to help them improve the beach for next year's tourist season.
