NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Tuesday was the first day of school for students in New Hanover County, and while kids were trying to adjust to being back in the classroom, drivers had to adjust to more traffic in school zones.

Now that school is back in session, New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies say drivers should plan ahead so they're not speeding through school zones.

School resource officers and members of the New Hanover County Traffic Department were on the streets to ensure things went smoothly on the first day of school.

"Well, we will especially have it heavy the first week back in, because everybody just forgets," said New Hanover Co. Sheriff Ed McMahon.  "So, we'll be especially heavy with our enforcement in the areas this week and we'll do as much as we can the rest of the school year."

According to McMahon there were no major problems the first day of school.  He wants to remind older students who may hunt that it is against the law to have a gun in your car on campus.
