Reports say UNC student killed by police had a gun

CHAPEL HILL, NC (WECT) - A 20-year-old student from UNC Chapel Hill was shot and killed by police this weekend.

Courtland Smith of Texas was pronounced dead around 6:00 Sunday morning after being admitted to High Point Regional Hospital.

Smith was reportedly shot and killed by an Archdale Police officer after a confrontation on I-85 in Randolph County.

The News and Observer of Raleigh is reporting that the fraternity president called an emergency dispatcher for help.  He told the dispatcher he had a gun and admitted to drinking.

According to the Archdale Police Department, the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave while the SBI investigates.
