NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Next year emergency officials say our area should have the ability to text emergency messages to 911 operators.
Parts of the country are now testing out a 911 texting system. Emergency workers say the ability to text 911 will be a huge improvement for people who are hearing impaired and anyone who is in a dangerous situation like a kidnapping or home invasion.
"Certainly when our system is capable of being able to utilize that technology we'll do everything we can to be able to provide that to the citizens," said New Hanover County Emergency Management Director, Warren Lee.
Lee said the new 911 phone system could also make it possible to send photos and video in the future as well.
