Surfers in Pender Co. chase the waves

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Even though Hurricane Bill is miles off shore, the storm is contributing to dangerous rip currents.

EMS Officials say no one should be heading into the surf with the rough conditions, but that's not keeping swimmers away in Surf City.

Pender County beaches are not staffed with lifeguards, but surfers said the big waves were worth the risk.

"Mostly the surfers can take care of themselves," said Sam Taylor. "Usually if you see somebody else in trouble, usually another surfer will go help them, if anything but I mean nobody is really going to get in that much trouble, the waves aren't that bad right now."

Pender County Water Rescue has doubled their staff and extended their hours in preparation for the storm.
