Parking fees could increase for one downtown Wilmington lot

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you're used to parking in the open air lot at 2nd and Market Streets in downtown Wilmington, you may need to bring some extra change or find a new lot.

Last month the Parking Advisory Committee decided to close the lot at midnight to discourage loitering.  Managers said the time change has gone smoothly.

"The police have been able to keep the crowds in control," said Wilmington Parking Manager Betty Gurganus.  "There has been no negative impact at all. They are able to close it at midnight. The cars that are there can still be there and they are free to leave when they return to their cars at 1 o'clock or later."

In an effort to offset losing about $13,000 in revenue, the committee is considering increasing the parking fee by a dollar for that lot from Thursday night through Sunday.

The parking committee will vote on the increase during its meeting in September.
