WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington man is facing animal cruelty charges after leaving an injured dog in a vacant apartment.

A witness told the Wilmington Police Department 18-year-old Curtis Xavier White threw the female pit bull mix against the wall as punishment for misbehavior.

Monday evening, officers found the dog lying on a blanket, whimpering, and unable to move the lower part of her body.

According to police, the food and water bowls were empty, and there were dog feces throughout the apartment.

The dog was transported to the emergency clinic for treatment, but did not survive.

"It should not have happened," said Judy Evonko with Animal Control.  "I don't know what caused it to happen, but there are other ways to take out your frustrations, and not take them out of a defenseless animal."

White was charged with felony cruelty to animals and will be responsible for veterinary charges.
