WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Several people gathered Thursday to help a non-profit group and the local environment.

AlphaGreen Technologies joined folks from Cape Fear River Watch to put a non-copper, non-toxic paint on the bottom of their newly donated patrol boat.

Students from Cape Fear Community College's boat building class were able to get some hands-on experience with the paint as well.

"To be able to move to something that is more environmentally friendly," said Pete Simpson.  "The Navy uses a tremendous amount of these paints.  It's a huge industry and to see it moving green is great. It's had a big impact on the marine environment."

Having copper on the bottom of boats is dangerous because it leaches into the water and is toxic to the environment.
