WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington is the home of a $10,000 winning Powerball ticket.
The North Carolina Education Lottery presented Brian Swafford with a large check after his numbers were picked Saturday, August 15.
The ticket was purchased at the Scotchman located at the intersection of College Road and 17th Street.
The winning ticket was claimed Tuesday morning when Swafford's mother presented her son's ticket at the Scotchman. That's when she learned her son was the winner of $10,000.
"I said to my son, 'Do you have your shoes on?' He said, 'Yea, why?'" explained Swafford's mother Eileen. "I said, 'We have to go for a ride.' He said, 'Why, what happened?' I started crying and I said, 'I think you won the $10,000 at the Scotchman.' He looked at me and said, 'What?' I said, 'Really, I'm not kidding. The lady said you have to go to the office to claim your prize.'"
Swafford was awarded a total of $6,800 after taxes were taken out.
Eileen said Brian is already helping his parents pay some bills and is going to use the money to catch himself up.
