NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington River Group has one more chance to meet the Wilmington City Council's deadline to close on property intended to facilitate a hotel.
The council voted Tuesday evening to give the group until noon on Friday, August 28. The group has a contract to buy the land from the city in order to build a hotel next to the future convention center, but they failed to secure the necessary funding required.
Council members also included a provision that the group begin construction on the hotel by December 1.
"I believe the worst thing that could happen to us is that they buy the property and do not build the hotel," said Mayor Bill Saffo. "So then we're stuck with a situation where we need a hotel and they have the property."
If the Wilmington River Group is able to provide the funds to begin building, it will be held to the original deadline of December 1.
