Wilm. residents raise awareness about midwives

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Several concerned mothers and other Wilmington residents have been lining the sidewalks on 17th Street in front of Carolina OB/GYN in protest.

Earlier this month, patients of Carolina OB/GYN were told the group's midwifery program had dissolved with no explanation.

They were told they needed to reschedule their midwife's appointments to an obstetrician.

Now the women are trying to raise awareness.  Some even painted their pregnant bellies for the cause.  They say midwives provided a different service to the community and they want them back.

"It's great," said concerned resident Kathryn Siler.  "I think it's empowering themselves and their bodies. I think it's a creative way to send the message, and I think it's effective."

The women say they plan to continue to raise awareness about the issue.
