Dr. Lerch Question 11

In order to continue moving in a positive direction, New Hanover County Schools had to be even more focused than ever last year   In an effort to be prescriptive, our schools used and closely monitored data from multiple sources to make informed decisions about the intentional delivery of instruction in order to meet the individual needs of each and every student.  We made sure that all instruction was rigorous, relevant, and completely aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study at every grade level and with every subject.  Our goal was not only to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) with all subgroups last year, but to continue to make academic growth in the years ahead as we graduate students who are globally competitive and prepared for life in the 21st Century.

Retesting is certainly a factor in the improvement of our district's scores as it helped most districts improve throughout the state. However, retesting helps students who were already close to making the improvement to the next level. NHCS' scores indicate that the majority of our students are growing, the academic improvement strategies we have in place are working and in general, the students continue to improve each year.
