BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Board of Alderman voted Thursday night to keep Southport's City lines in place.
They voted 4 to 2, repealing the city's planned annexation. The proposal would have added tracts of land on both sides of North Howe Street.
The city said the urbanized area has a heavy usage on city services, which is a reason why it should be paying city taxes.
Officials said it's not fair to city residents who are footing the bill.
"They're paying city and county taxes were as the citizens outside are paying only county taxes yet they're using all the services the city provides all the infrastructure the roads everything so it's a more equitable solution," said planning director Amy Nelson.
Officials said there are also environmental concerns. Enclosed city planning discourages sprawl and protects green space.
