Fall softball league eliminated at Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Town of Wrightsville Beach will not be holding a fall softball season because of the down economy.

According to Katie Ryan with the town's parks and recreation department, there needed to be at least 22 teams to keep the league in tact.  But as of Aug. 14 only ten teams had registered.

Due to budget concerns the town had to release the person responsible for maintaining the softball field and increase the registration fee for all players, but not enough people signed up to play.

"It's very disappointing to see it not happening again this fall," said Ryan.  "I know that there are a lot of folks that have been playing out here for many years, as many as 30 years. Their children are playing now and playing with them, with their dads and moms."

Ryan said she is hopeful the town will be able to host a spring softball league.
