What is the Safe Surrender law?

NORTH CAROLINA (WECT) - North Carolina babies are killed or left to die every year by a parent in crisis who may feel they have no other choice, but there's a law that could help.

North Carolina's Safe Surrender law allows parents to surrender a baby up to 7-days-old to a responsible adult.  A baby may be given to a health care provider, law enforcement, or any social service workers.

Statistics show the risk of homicide on a baby's first day is ten times greater than any other time of life.

This law offers a way to surrender unwanted newborns safely and anonymously.
