NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A new dispatch system in New Hanover County will help save lives and homes faster.
911 calls for fires in both the city and county were on the same channel and handled by a two-person team.
The first operator sends a pre-alert to all stations near the fire. Then, the second operator takes over to get more information and make a final dispatch.
Now, there is a new pre-alert system that gives firefighters a heads-up to get their gear on and get ready for the flames.
"Once we get the dispatch we would already be ready to go, so that whole what we call 'turn out time' cuts down that amount of time to prepare to actually go," said NHC Fire Captain Dorian Flowers.
Both city and county officials said the new system is part of a larger cooperative plan.
They will soon be working together to give automatic aid to areas like the newly annexed Monkey Junction.
