NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Surfers from all over the country are in Wrightsville Beach this weekend for the 13th annual Wahine Surfing Competition.
It is the only competition on the east coast that features all female surfers. Age is not a factor for the surfers; the youngest female participating in the event is four-years-old and the oldest is in her sixties.
The surfers gather every year to honor a lost loved one.
"It started from a sad event. A girl committed suicide," said Mary Ann Mangiacatre, event organizer. "The girls decided to get together at least once a year and meet for the sake of camaraderie. From that, the contest formed. It's just been fun."
The event will last through Sunday and will conclude with an awards ceremony.
