Property cleared where the homeless once settled

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Monday is the deadline for a homeless camp off Carolina Beach Road to be cleared.

Last month, property owner Sharon Efird learned that dozens of homeless people were living on her property when the city cited her for public nuisance.

Efird was told she had until August 10 to clean up the property and get rid of the current tenants, or face fines of $100 a day.

According to Efird, her part of the property has been cleared - a project costing her about $850.  Land surveyors told Efird that the remaining mess belongs to a nearby car shop.

Efird has marked off her land with "No Trespassing" signs and said she plans to have the are completely cleared to keep campers out.

Wilmington Police Officers are expected to check-in this week.  The city said if more work needs to be done they will be flexible with Efird's deadline.
