NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - One Wilmington man isn't letting the unemployment blues get him down.
In fact, it actually inspired Matthew Dionne to brainstorm quite an effective marketing strategy. After endless hours on the internet and scouring newspapers, Dionne came up with a plan to market himself, and what better way to do it than face to face.
Dionne grabbed a sandwich board, wrote his credentials on the front and back of it and wore it around his neck while he walked the streets of downtown Wilmington.
"I needed something like this to put me in the forefront of the everyday stuff that people are doing to try to get work," said Dionne.
And stand out he did - sporting a suit and tie, Dionne handed out résumés to potential employers, most of whom seemed very impressed with his "thinking outside the box" marketing skills.
"With the current economy and the situation it is, you've got to market yourself however you can," said Lance Britt, interested employer. "So as far as marketing goes, that's marketing and advertising at its best!"
Dionne said that even though the economy is down, it doesn't mean his chances for employment have to be and his strategy is already proving to be a success.
"I got an interview strictly on the fact that the idea was crazy enough that they wanted to interview me," said Dionne.
Dionne says he plans to continue walking and marketing until he finds a way to make ends meet.
