LUMBERTON, NC (WECT) - Funeral services will be held Wednesday night for a young woman killed in a hit-and-run over the weekend.

Lumberton Police say they were alerted to a person lying in the northbound lane of I-95 near Exit 13 around 11:00 Sunday night. Investigators say a man and a woman, both in their 20s, had a flat tire and pulled off the left side.

Authorities believe they were changing the tire when 23-year-old Ashley Smith of Lumberton, was hit and killed by a passing vehicle. The male, 30-year-old Broderick Jones, of Proctorville, was injured and taken to an area hospital. Smith was from Lumberton.

Funeral services for Smith will be held at 6:30 Wednesday evening at Floyd's Funeral Home in Lumberton.  A graveside service is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Smith leaves behind a 4-year-old son.  A memorial fund has been set up at the Wachovia Bank in Elizabethtown.

Investigators say they have no information at this time on the incident or the vehicle that hit them. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Lumberton Police at 910-671-3909.
