KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Town of Kure Beach received $500,000 Friday from the Natural Heritage Trust Fund to go towards paying off Ocean Front Park.

Mayor Mac Montgomery signed a conservation easement that will give them another $600,000 from the state.

He said the park is an important part of the Kure Beach community.

"Now we have a piece of property that's available for the public that will form a basis for developing the business district in Kure Beach because more people will come," said Montgomery.  "When people come, they'll frequent our businesses."

The Town purchased the former Rolling Surf Motel property in 2007 for $3.6 million. With the recent cash awards, the Town has successfully been awarded over $2.3 million for the acquisition of park, all of which is used to pay down the mortgage.

Town officials are applying for more grants to help continue paying their Ocean Front Park loan.
