COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Whiteville Police Department will soon add several cruisers to their fleet.

Council members signed a $240,000 USDA grant for the department earlier this month.  The police department will use the money to purchase eight new patrol vehicles.

Whiteville Police Chief Jerry Britt said the new cars will be helpful for the department.

"They're needed very badly," said Britt.  "Like I said, we have several patrol cars here at the police department that have high mileage. Several of them have over 100,000. We've got probably about five that's close to 100,000 miles on the cars. So it was something we needed very badly, and it's going to help out the department tremendously."

According to Chief Britt, the police department should start receiving the cars in October.
