Noble Middle School trains for hurricane evacuations

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County Animal Services volunteers and officials participated in a disaster training drill at Noble Middle School Thursday afternoon.

The middle school is the only venue in the county where both pets and their owners can seek shelter during an evacuation.  Exotic pets like snakes and amphibians are not permitted at the shelter during an evacuation.

The shelter can accommodate 200 people, 60 dogs, and 36 cats.

"Your pet is your responsibility and it makes sense for you to provide for your pet as well as yourself in case of any disaster," said Jean McNeil with NHC Animal Services.  "We'll be here to help you when we can, but it's important that you have alternate resources - not just look to us as your sole source of care for your pet."
