WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Independence Mall held a contest to create opportunities for area entrepreneurs in this time of economic struggle.

George Kelly owns Baby Print Art and is one of dozens who competed in the mall's "You're in Business" contest.

He and his partner competed with other business owners for free rent in a mall kiosk until the end of the year.

"This is basically a dream come true because the mall gave us an opportunity to get the retail space for nothing," said Kelly.

His winning idea is to take a hand or food print from a kid or grandchild, scan it into a computer and then add pictures to it.  He prints the collage on museum quality canvas for the customer to take home.

"Everybody stops and looks and says, 'Aw that's cute,'" said Kelly.  "And it's a great response so far."

"We're buying a combo hand and foot print with a picture of my grandson, and we are doing it in a color scheme that matches his own room," said customer Doug Tarble.

Even though Kelly's business won the kiosk, he may not be the only winner.

"Well basically what we hope to do is generate enough sales to where we continue to lease from the mall, which will help them, and promote business for the mall," said Kelly.
