BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Construction on a new park in Southport will begin in September.

Southport Mayor Sandy Spencer said the town will finally start building Low White Park after three years of planning.

The park will feature tennis and basketball courts, picnic tables, and a playground.

Although Southport is typically a tourist town, Spencer said it's nice to build something for the residents.

"I'm thrilled to death because after all it's the taxpayers of this city who deserve and need to have it," said Spencer.  "They pay for these projects, and we want to give back them. I think this is going to be an asset to all of us."

The park located off Leonard Street will cost a little more than $400,000.
