High school students train to be nurses

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - High school students are getting the chance to work alongside local nurses and with patients thru UNCW's Camp BONES program.

Students from eight counties will shadow nurses at New Hanover Regional Medical Center for two weeks.

The program has inspired at least one participant to enter nursing as a profession.

"I hope to learn to be a nurse, so I can become a better nurse, and I just want to make my career into nursing," said Khadijah Campbell.

Camp BONES is designed to help combat the national nursing shortage.  At the end of the four year program, students will be certified nursing assistants.
