WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington dog is recovering after being attacked by an alligator.

John Horn said his dog Chico goes to the pond behind his home off of Carolina Beach Road almost everyday to get water. But, he said last week an alligator tried to grab the dog.

"One of my roommates witnessed the dog running from the edge of the pond and the dog was crying," said John Horn the dog's owner. "So my roommate ran over here and witnessed the alligator half way on the hill in the same area where the dog ran from."

Horn told WECT news a wildlife officer relocated the alligator into a safe habitat a few days ago. Chico has a few scars, but is expected to be okay.

Zoo-keepers at Tregembo Animal Park suggest to stay alert around water when you or your pets are around water.
