NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Law enforcement officers give a lot by risking their lives on the streets everyday and Saturday they asked citizens to give a little something back, for a good cause.
Members of the Wilmington Police Department held a fundraiser at CiCi's Pizza in Wilmington. The money raised at the event will be used to build a memorial wall to honor fallen colleagues.
Ivan Koloff, former professional wrestler, made an appearance to support the mission and to sign autographs at the fundraiser.
Over the past two years, the W.P.D. has been trying to raise a quarter of a million dollars to construct a memorial wall to be placed outside of the W.P.D. headquarters.
The future wall will commemorate local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
"I think it will give a lot of people a place to go to reflect and remember these officers and the sacrifices that they made and will give their families a peaceful place," said Lt. Kathy Cochran, Wilmington Police Department. "It's overdue and it's a worthwhile cause. We are excited to be a part of it."
An architect has already drawn up blueprints for the memorial and officials hope to have the wall up by 2011.
In the meantime, the department will hold another fundraiser, September 12, at Independence Mall in Wilmington.
