WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Twelve Wilmington homeowners, who are desperately in need of house repairs, received free help this week.

About 250 volunteers with the Mission Serve Organization are repairing roofs, painting the inside and outside of homes, and even fixing a kitchen. Thursday, the group was at a home on Pine Clay Drive.

The volunteers are from all over the United States. They were given a $15,000 grant from the City of Wilmington to fix a dozen homes.

The homeowners are all on fixed incomes, which makes it very special for them.

"Let me tell you, the homeowners are so appreciative, it brings tears to their eyes" said volunteer Walter Hisle.  "They never thought they would be able to see their homes be repaired and taken care of like we are doing."

The program runs until Saturday. The participants are staying at the First Baptist Church activities center on Independence Boulevard.
