Farmers optimistic that peanut plant fire won't hurt business

CLARKTON, NC (WECT) - It's been nearly a week since two warehouses at the EJ Cox peanut processing plant in Clarkton burned, and smoke is still rising from some of the debris.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but investigators say it was likely caused by a lightning strike or electrical spark.

The warehouses were storing more than 4-million pounds of peanuts when they went up in flames on Thursday, July 16.

Despite the fire causing millions of dollars worth of damage, some local farmers who sell peanuts to the plant don't think the fire will effect their business.

Owners of the McPherson peanut farm in Bladen County tell WECT, they don't start selling peanuts to the processing plant until late September.  That gives the plant some time to find another way to store the nuts.
