COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - A report by a watchdog group says some disabled South Carolinians in residential care facilities live in dangerous, deplorable conditions.
The report Tuesday, by the group Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities, says some people in state-licensed, federally funded residential centers live amid insect infestations and lack adequate food and heat.
The group also says medications often are improperly administered.
The nonprofit group calls for more funding for the Department of Health and Environmental Control and other agencies responsible for overseeing the facilities.
A call to a DHEC spokesman was not immediately returned Tuesday.
