NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - 32-year-old Leroy Bernard Sampson Jr. made his first appearance in court Monday morning for the murder of 17-year-old Tyshawn Gause.
Police say Sampson turned himself in around 11:30pm Saturday, only a few hours after hundreds of loved ones gathered at Mount Calvary Church in Wilmington to say goodbye to Gause. Gause's mother is relieved to know the man she thinks took her son's life is now behind bars.
"I feel like I can be able to rest now that he's no longer in the streets," said Lakeitha Smith Gause's mother. "and knowing justice is going to be served."
Police say Sampson shot and killed Gause July 11th on the corner of Red Cross and North 8th Street.
Leroy Sampson Jr. is being held at the New Hanover County Jail charged with first degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and weapon possession by a felon. He is being held with no bond.
