WIMLINGTON, NC (WECT) - The deadline for candidates to file for office is Friday at noon, and as of Thursday evening there were still a few empty seats around the area that no one is running for.
Most of the empty seats are in Brunswick County, which isn't a surprise to the county's director of elections.
"We have so many municipalities and special elections with 19 municipalities," said Brunswick County Director of Elections Greg Bellamy. "It's not unusual."
In Columbus County no one has filed to run for mayor in the Town of Boardman or the town council's seat.
Tar Heel in Bladen County had three commissioner seats available but only one person filed. Likewise, White Lake has three open seats with only one candidate filed.
No one has filed to run for one open council seat in Brunswick County at Bald Head. The Town of Calabash has three commissioner seats available and only has one candidate.
The Town of Northwest is also facing empty seats for council members which concerns the town's mayor.
"Because we're getting someone that may not be most qualified and just decides they want to run," said Northwest Mayor James A. Knox.
Knox filed to run for re-election Thursday morning and was appalled to see that no one filed for three council seats.
"I thought they would have filed but they didn't," said Knox. "I begin to call some of them and they say they're going to run and file this afternoon or tomorrow."
