WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Some area kindergartners had a weather lesson from one of our resident experts Thursday.

First Alert Meteorologist Colin Hackman taught the kids about summer storm safety at the New Hanover County Pre-K Center on College Road.

The students are participating in a week long safety summer camp, sponsored by New Hanover Regional Medical Center's trauma services.

This is the first year of the camp and the coordinator said it won't be the last.

"It's fun because I'm getting to educate kids," said Tina Damico Poole with NHRMC.  "They're getting to learn a whole bunch of really great things that they're gonna be able to take with them for the rest of their lives."

In addition to Colin, a member of the Cape Fear Chapter of the Red Cross taught the kids how to prepare for a hurricane.
