DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Lake Leamon in Duplin County is clear, calm and closed after several visitors claim they got sick after swimming there.

Owners closed the lake last Friday, August 10, after Duplin County officials received numerous complaints.

"The number one priority is to make sure the public is safe to come to the lake and if there's any doubt or question we want to check it first and make the people confident that the water's safe," said Gary Richard, family spokesman.

Janelle Walker say the discoloration on her skin is evidence the lake caused her to get sick. She says she camped at Lake Leamon for the Fourth of July.

"I know three other people that were vomiting, had diarrhea and another person that had throat problems," said Walker.

She says the lake smelled of dead fish and sewage, but did not think much of it until later.

"I think it should be brought up to code," said Walker. "It should be safe for people to be down there. I know it's a private place but you pay to get in, you expect a certain amount of safety when you go there."

The owners of the lake say it is safe and are having test done to make certain there are no health threats.

Water sample results taken from Lake Leamon should be back by the end of this week.
