BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Leland family is mourning the loss of a man who died trying to save his daughter.

Sandra Weaver was left in tears Friday, trying to understand why her husband was taken away.

Around 7:00 PM, June 27, 41-year-old David Weaver jumped in the surf off Carolina Beach in an effort to rescue his 13-year-old daughter, Amanda, and a family friend who was caught in a rip current.

Sandra said lifeguards showed up within minutes and brought Weaver to shore, but it was too late.  He wasn't breathing and had to be put on life support.

David fought on life support for 12 days before the family let him go.  Sandra said he was a good swimmer but was just no match for two powerful currents.

Funeral services for David are scheduled for 2:00 Monday afternoon at Andrews Mortuary.
