NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington family has filed suit against a former teacher accused of being sexually involved with a teenage boy.

Attorney Troy Slaughter, who is representing the student and his family, said he filed suit Friday morning against accused teacher Jessica Wishnask, along with the principal and vice principal of Williston Middle School.

Slaughter said principal Mary Paul Beall and vice principal Burton Kilpatrick met with Wishnask and the teenager twice to discuss their relationship.

Slaughter said Wishnask was suspended, but the young man's family was never notified of a problem.

"The first goal is to make sure this doesn't happen to another child in New Hanover County," said Slaughter. "That is our first goal. This did not have to happen.  We want to make sure the constitutional right that every child in this state has to an education is safeguarded by the board of education, administrators and by every person with a position of authority in New Hanover County so this does not happen again."

The suit claims Wishnask was negligent and violated the student's constitutional rights.

According to Slaughter, it also alleges the school officials were negligent in their failure to take steps to protect the student.
