WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - There is a new operation that won't leave you with any signs of scaring from your procedure.

Connie Ivey has been in and out of hospitals for most of her life with problems in her abdominal area.

Just a few months ago it was time for another surgery, but this time was different.

"This surgery was so much easier because when I've healed, I don't have 4 more incisions," said Ivey.

Dr. Kamron Goudarzi told her about a new technique known as SILS, which stands for single incision laproscopic surgery.

The new approach means recovery is easier and patients return to their everyday lives earlier.

The natural shape and structure of the bellybutton hides any evidence of the surgical incision.

"If you're concerned about your scars, you only have one 1 scar, and its in your navel," said Ivey.

This technique is better for the patient and doctor and is close to becoming standard at hospitals nationwide.

SILS is a rapidly evolving technique that is also being applied to other areas of health care.

Some surgeons are successfully using this procedure for urological, gynecological, kidney, and colon surgeries.
