PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A black bear cub seen roaming around the Hampstead community may have been killed last week.

The bear had been spotted hanging out in a resident's backyard, now they say that same bear may have been hit by a truck as it was crossing Highway 17 near Clayton Mobile Homes.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

According to wildlife experts, our bear population is about 8,000 along the coast.  They say most bears are afraid of the own shadows, but become accustomed to a certain area.

Experts say to not attempt to trap or capture the animal.  They say the bear should move on if the food source is removed.
