WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Pharmaceutical Product Development plans to cut hundreds of jobs.

Company officials said 270 workers will be let go from the company's North American locations, including corporate headquarters in downtown Wilmington.

About 80 of the laid off employees are Wilmington residents. Corporate relations director Louise Caudle said employees were told about the cuts Wednesday, and they come from a variety of areas within the company.

She said demand for the company's services in North America is lower than expected, but PPD still has a backlog of business worldwide.

There are currently no plans for any further cuts according to officials.

Affected employees will receive transition pay, benefits, and help finding new jobs.
