NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Efforts are underway to save the Human Relations Department in New Hanover County.
New Hanover County Commissioners voted to eliminate the department, which dealt with issues like race and gender discrimination, in hopes to save money.
Wilmington City Council member Ronald Sparks wants to appeal to the council Tuesday to form a new department.
He joined WECT Monday on Carolina in the Morning and said the department could be run by volunteers.
"The issues in Wilmington now are not black, white - they are racial, they are gender," said Sparks. "There are a lot of ADA. There's housing. There's a whole constellation of things that the human relations commission needs to be involved in and help coordinate."
Sparks also said he and others in the community tried to schedule meetings with county commissioners for three months before they voted to cut the department.
He said none of the commissioners responded.
