WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Congressman Mike McIntyre presented a check of almost $1 million in federal funds to Wilmington International Airport Monday morning.

The $915,661 will be used for the rehabilitation of the air carrier apron, which is the pavement between the runway and the terminal where aircrafts park.

ILM was chosen out of thousands of airports nationwide because of the total impact the airport has on the city. The airport also provides the county with a significant source of property tax revenue.

"Well I think this check and the project it's helping pay for is indicative of the growth we've seen at ILM over the last several years," said authority board member John Lennon.  "Last year we eclipsed over 800-thousand passengers and obviously we need to maintain the airport to ensure we can continue to provide that level of service as well as continue or growth."

Airport authorities said construction on the apron should begin within the next month and a half.
