New Hanover County, NC (WECT) - Dozens of people took a step to honor the four soldiers from our local area who were killed in Iraq earlier this week.

The "Step Up for Soldiers Program" and the Wilmington Fire Department teamed up to make the remembrance walk Sunday a successful event.

Flags were lowered in remembrance of the soldiers, including Wilmington resident and firefighter Sergeant 1st Class Ed Kramer.

Scott Kaczynski, co-worker and friend of Kramer, said walking in the event was the least he could do.  "He served our community as a firefighter and he served our country as a soldier and ultimately he paid the ultimate sacrifice.   So in a small way, I want to be here for him and his family to let them know we do care."

The walk started at the Wilmington Fire Department headquarters and ended more than eight blocks away on Water Street.

It served as a time for people to share memories of Kramer and reflect on his life, but also as a way to show support for those he left behind.

A memorial service has not yet been finalized for Kramer, but friends said he will be buried in the National Cemetery on Market Street.
