NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County officials have approved construction on a new recreational park that some say could be one of the nicest facilities in the state.

The 93-acre recreational park will be on Harris Road, just off Gordon Road.  The area has been used as a sand pit for years, but now the county is looking to turn Smith Creek Park into a recreational park.

The park will feature a paved walking trail a little more than a mile long, in addition to sheltered picnic areas, a boat ramp, and a fishing pier.

"It's projected to have canoes, boats, it will have picnic tables, and small sail boats," said NHC Manager Bruce Shell.

Resident Ken Fitzgerald brings his dogs to the lake in the area and said the park can't come soon enough.

"It's been about 2 years now," said Fitzgerald.  "We understand there's been problems, but we're looking forward to this park being complete."

Shell said the $600,000 the county raised from selling sand from the park will go toward construction of the park.  Commissioners received a $500,000 grant to help build the park.

Construction on Smith Creek is expected to begin at the start of 2010 and be complete by next fall.
