WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - A pawn shop in Whiteville is selling the biggest gun allowed to be owned by the general public.

People trickled in and out of Pawn USA to catch a glimpse of a Barrett .50 Caliber Rifle, the largest gun in the United States that can be purchased by a civilian.

"We've got some interested folks who want to buy it, but it's just amazing how many people come in just to look at it to see what it looks like," said store manager Brian Murphy.  "It's actually size wise, it's so large it almost looks like a mock up. A lot of people thinks it's a model because it's so big."

The long range rifle is rare in the eastern part of the country, and has been known to be able to shoot a bullet as far 1.5 miles away.

It's generally used by troops during wartime, but Murphy explained the 37 pound firearm is also a big draw for hunters.

"I've seen it being used for sheep and elk at long range," said Murphy.

Murphy said he was contacted by the Barrett Company about a month ago and asked if he would like to sell one.

Pawn USA in Whiteville is selling the Barrett .50 Caliber Rifle for $11,500.  Bullets for the gun cost about $7 a piece.
