WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - On holidays I like to use this segment to draw attention to the special meaning behind the observance.
On Veteran's or Memorial Day we talk about those who fought to give us our freedom. On Mother's or Father's Day we talk about the influence of parents. And on July 4th we talk about love of country.
The easy commentary to write would be about how this holiday has lost its meaning. How the issue of freedom gets lost in the shuffle of backyard barbeques, trips to the beach or the thrill of setting off fireworks.
But the truth is - that type of recreation is what the 4th has always been about - the self evident truth that our creator has given us the indelible right to pursue happiness. That still remains a revolutionary notion.
So go to the beach. Put another burger on the grill. Light up a sparkler or two. In so many ways it is exactly what Jefferson would have hoped for. Celebrate that freedom and know it is envied around the world.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
