WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Wrightsville Beach Police Department has applied for a grant to obtain four surveillance cameras that would be able to record license plate numbers.

According to Police Chief John Carey, the town wants the cameras to be placed near the beach drawbridge.

The system would store license plate numbers and provide authorities with data, should they want to review it later.

The system would run every plate through the FBI's National Crime Information Center to search for anyone with an outstanding warrant or criminal record.

The Wilmington Police Department has also applied for grant money to put the same type of cameras along local highways.
